Female donkeys (called jennies) go into estrus, or heat, every 21 days. Estrus lasts for about 5-7 days, and during this period, they exhibit signs such as increased vocalization, restlessness, and tail lifting. The female is receptive to mating during this time.
Male donkeys (called jacks) become more active during the female’s estrus period. They may approach the female, engage in vocalizations (like braying), and perform courtship behaviors such as sniffing and nuzzling.
Once the female is fully receptive, mating occurs. The male mounts the female from behind and aligns himself to copulate. Donkeys have a typical copulatory process similar to other equids, where the male ejaculates after a brief period.
